Food Shelf

Are you pretty sure you’ll have dinner tonight? Are you fairly confident that your kids will have something for breakfast before school? Do you have the resources to buy or grow the food you and your family need? Many of us can answer “Yes” to these questions. Some of us not only have our basic needs covered but are also able to go out to eat, and have a big snack platter for the game, or buy gourmet food items of our choosing. We experience a strong sense of food security – never, never really worrying or wondering about having enough food.

The disparity between the “Haves” and the “Have nots” is staggering. One person will spend $28 on a steak while another person will buy several days worth of food on that same $28. The reasons for this disparity are interesting and important to ponder. Food is a basic human need. Our children do better in school with proper nutrition. Our entire community is healthier, safer, and stronger when all community members’ basic needs are met.

Common dinner table prayers include something like, “Let us remember those less fortunate”. As we count our blessing for all the good things that have come to us, let us not only remember those less fortunate but also do something to help.
